Terra Cotta line is designed around the idea of the wardrobe. The styles are intended to blend in to an existing wardrobe or stand on their own. Terra Cotta is a clean and simply tailored line of clothing, designed using woven, textured and stretch fabrics. A woman wearing the Terra Cotta Brand feels as comfortable in the office as she does at home or at a dinner engagement. She expects someone to say "You look great! Where did you get that outfit? It suits you!"
Terra Cotta first sprang up from a warehouse live in artists studio in East Los Angeles in 1984, and was growing steadily until 1989, when Barbara closed the business to marry and move to Toronto. After a year at Holiday Sportswear designing for the Alfred Sung children's wear line she had a baby. In January 1992 Terra Cotta Clothing Design was formed and offered design and pattern services. By 1993 TCCD returned to the wholesale market. Terra Cotta was launched in the fall of 1993 at the Mode Show. The line consisted of 10 styles of slips in sheer and translucent fabrics. The line was well received and by spring of 1994 there was a demand for dresses and sportswear. Terra Cotta has grown from its bedroom studio in Toronto to it's current 2nd floor 2000 square foot studio at 450 Spadina. In the fall of 1998 Barbara Starr opened a retail store, Castlefield 9, in Toronto that features the Terra Cotta label.
The Terra Cotta woman is 25 to 45 years of age and has nothing to hide yet demands comfort. She is savvy and sophisticated. Her taste palette prefers the unique design and superior quality found in mid to high-end boutiques. Her clothes are meant to compliment both her figure and her personality. She is concerned with quality, style and comfort.
